Curious minds want to know: why the ER visit?
Upon returning home Friday night, Jordan told me he couldn’t move the top, right part of his lip and was having a hard time controlling his right eye lid. Like any rational person, we hopped onto WebMd to find a diagnosis. We found three diagnosis: tumor, stroke, Bell’s palsy.
To rule out the first two, we headed to the ER Saturday afternoon. Wow. And I thought MARTA and the Social Security Office had the most eclectic patrons. The ER wins hands down.
After 4 hours at Piedmont, we learned it was Bell’s palsy. For those not familiar with the ailment, it is a form of facial paralysis resulting from a dysfunction of the facial nerve that results in the inability to control facial muscles on the affected side. This would be Jordan’s right side. Thankfully, it seems to only be a mild case.
It’s not clear what causes Bell’s palsy. There have been studies suggesting it could be a virus, like a dormant chickenpox virus resurfacing or a cold virus. There is no way to tell. Whatever the case, not much can be done and we just have to wait for Jordan’s nerves to heal.
